Sling Breaks – Causes Destruction

I visited a marina last week on St. Simon’s Island, Georgia, – what a beautiful place. I was there as one of our clients purchased two new 2-ton electric chain hoists.

They hoisted me up by their forklift to inspect the trolley which they wanted to hang the hoists from. It was completely rusted out.

I let my client know: Using that trolley was like buying a brand new car and sticking bald worn out tires onto it. I refused to allow them to do this. I probably saved their $3000 hoists from eventual destruction.

They were building a new dock and adding to the marina so I started asking questions and we spent about an hour talking, and the person asked me about nylon slings etc. She told me about the company building the dock and that a sling broke. We looked at the video of the day of the accident from the surveillance camera. It wasn’t pretty.

I told them that braided wire rope slings work best for lifting concrete sections with sharp edges. It was a good thing they brought me down there, both so I could help with the trolley and the slings. I only wish they had called me beforehand to prevent the accident. At least no one got killed.

For this reason, it is best to consult a rigging professional when selecting and buying your rigging. Yes it is true that you can buy rigging and slings from a “big box catalogue”. But consider the fact that you can buy body bags from the same catalogue. Don’t take that risk! Call a professional rigging consultant at Consolidated Rigging. They will help you select the right sling for the job…guaranteed.

It’s always best to have a professional on-hand right from the beginning. To ensure safety in whatever rigging and lifting job you have, call the professionals at 800-445-8965 and we’ll solve your problem.
